I really wanted to attend GTAC this year. For reasons not thoroughly explained, my application for attendance was denied. Am I bitter? Not really. I’m not at all one of the big minds in test automation. If anything, I’m a fly on the wall, gathering and applying as much from the stream of information that I can. I’ve been doing this for less than a year, all told. While I’m proud to the point of bursting for what I have accomplished in that time, I know better than to consider myself a prodigy or among the elite. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like to get there, and this blog is a part of that process.
So, now that GTAC is behind us, and the speakers have published their slides, I’ve taken the time to read through them, to see what new information or techniques I can apply to my own work. I’ll link to each and post a brief review, as applies to web test automation using Selenium & TestNG.
| Presentation | Presenter(s) | Highlight(s) |
|---|---|---|
| ETICS: An International Software Engineering Infrastructure | Alberto Di Meglio | No application to my work. This is tester-porn, as far as I’m concerned. |
| Automating Performance Test Data Collection and Reporting | David Burns & David Henderson | Definitely worth forwarding to our load/stress/performance engineer. I have no immediate use for this information. |
| The Mobile Testing Challenge:Why Mobile Apps Need Real-World Testing Coverage | Doron Reuveni | We have no mobile presence at my company, thus no immediate need to resolve issues with mobile app testing. |
| Precondition Satisfaction | Yi Serge | Not applicable to my work. This is more about generating complex object pools to test your classes. |
| Score One for Quality | Joshua Williams & Ross Smith | I found this to be a bit insulting. Purports to leverage my generation’s gamer psychology to increase testing productivity |
| Achieving Web Test Automation with Mixed-skills Teams | Mark Micallef | Maybe worth forwarding to my boss. Not so much related to what I do. |
| Fighting Layout Bugs | Michael Tamm | This, to me, is brilliant! Definitely something I should work to expand on. |
| GWT Pitfalls | Nicolas Wettstein | No applicability to me, since my application doesn’t use GWT |
| Selenium 2.0 and Beyond! | Simon Stewart & Jason Huggins | Selenium’s accessibility + WebDriver’s API = WIN |
